Grammy-winning artist Ed Sheeran is facing a $20 million copyright infringement lawsuit over his hit song “Photograph”.
2010 X-Factor winner Matt Cardle released a song called “Amazing”, which was written by Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard four years ago. Harrington and Leonard are claiming that Sheeran’s “Photograph” is a “note-for-note” copy of “Amazing”, particularly in the choruses of the songs.
Jump to 0:49 in “Amazing” and 2:28 in “Photograph” and see for yourself.
The lawsuit affirms that “the chorus sections of ‘Amazing’ and the infringing ‘Photograph’ share 39 identical notes – meaning the notes are identical in pitch, rhythmic duration, and placement in the measure”.
The suit was filed in LA on Wednesday. It’s not obvious yet how this will proceed, but it is likely that the case will see its day in court.
