Once upon a time Subculture Sounds and Hypeman Sage hatched Subculture Sage “the freshest duo in British
hip-hop,” proclaimed Wonderland Magazine‘s former editorial intern Lewis Goodacre. Their newest single “Drop” was mixed and mastered by Israeli Wu-Tang Clan engineer Yoram Vazen. The first 45 seconds bountifully bleed Hypeman Sage’s solemn words, packaged in soothing British Jamaican dialect. Next, the chorus shifts “Drop” from a track resembling the artistry of Kid Cudi to Atmosphere. Listeners sense Hypeman’s disgruntlement when his rap game speeds up, and weighty bass beats trigger organized chaos.
The pair garnered good vibes from industry influencers Majestic Casual, Noisey, Complex, Zane Lowe and Gilles Peterson with the release of Subculture Sage’s 2016 14-track debut mixtape Big Smoke Autumn Blues. Subculture Sage will continue hitting 2017 hard with the upcoming premiere of their sophomore EP Take 3, spot on Primary Talent’s roll call and gig at London’s The Camden Assembly on May 10.
