We’ve come across many different films that have tried to portray the electronic dance music scene, such as We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron. However, EDM fans weren’t too thrilled with the way the movie told the story.

Steve Aoki released a documentary, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, to show his challenging journey of making it big as a DJ/producer. It gives a good look into his life from when he was a kid with big dreams, to the struggles he went through and moving to L.A. to make those dreams come true.

Now, a new definitive film, What We Started, is about to be released to show the history of a well-insulated genre that has gone from secret warehouse parties to festival main stages. The dance music film, which premiered on June 15th, features some of the hottest DJs, such as Carl Cox, Moby, Paul Oakland, Erick Morillo and Martin Garrix. These favorite producers tell the full story of how dance music have evolved and transformed throughout the years.

While some of the big dance music icons disagree with the direction of the genre, others share that this is the future of music and they have no objection to go with it. Seth Troxler expresses his disdain for established young EDM giant Garrix saying, “How is a 17-year-old kid the f***ing face of dance music?” However, no matter what side you take, What We Started is a film that speaks to all dance music enthusiasts.
