The xx’s stunning video for “I Dare You” is a mini-film injected with pops of color, sleek, stylish characters, and a star-studded cast. The latest visual from the band’s January 2017 album, I See You, is a beautiful product of British photographer Alasdair McLellan and Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer Raf Simmons, who both provided direction for the video. The exquisite Millie Bobby Brown and Paris Jackson are brilliantly added to the mix, appearing alongside Ashton Sanders of the Oscar-winning Moonlight.
The video captures the whimsical beauty of Los Angeles and the classic tale of innocence and young love (think 500 Days of Summer meets Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). Millie Bobby Brown and Paris Jackson perfectly complement the song and visuals, breathing youthful romanticism into the atmosphere–all carefully packaged with an ethereal lo-fi filter.
The story itself transcends time, blending the colorful landscapes of the ’70s with the stunningly modern xx singing in the background. The tale centers on a tumultuous portrayal of young love, as two pairs of couples dance blissfully along The xx’s dreamy harmonies, while an outcasted teen (Brown) attempts to understand and overcome the growing pains of heartbreak. “I Dare You” presents itself as a glossy, carefree ode to the City of Angels and the dreamscape it creates for its inhabitants.
“We are so happy to share our new video for ‘I Dare You’,” said The xx in a statement.
“[It is] our love letter to Los Angeles, a city close to our hearts, where we wrote and recorded parts of our album I See You. This is the third video our friend, the wonderful Alasdair McLellan, has directed for us. He collaborated with a hero of ours, Raf Simons, on the creative concept and direction. It was amazing to work with both of them… We hope you enjoy watching!”
