Maya Jane Coles Shares Hypnotizing Single “Trails”
Anticipation continues to escalate for musical mastermind Maya Jane Coles’ upcoming release later this week, Take Flight. First premiered via Pete Tong’s show on BBC Radio 1, “Trails” is the latest single to be shared from the album. The full-length record will be released on her label I/AM/ME via Skint Records/BMG. It follows her 2013 debut album “Comfort” and marks her return from her Nocturnal Sunshine project. “Trails,” as well as several other tracks from Take Flight, are now available to stream via Apple Music and Spotify.
“Trails” provides the hypnotizing elements we’ve come to admire from Coles, in the form of spicy chords that drip down onto slithering percussion. The track is just a single example of the sonic variety that one can expect from Take Flight. Although only a handful of tracks from her sophomore record have been released, Coles’ already signifies her comfort in weaving through differing electronic elements: “Weak” features a filtered bassline and Coles’ lush vocals, while “Take Flight” roots its inspiration in trip-hop. She brings in guest appearances on several tracks, including Chelou, Wendy Rae Fowler, and Rachel Butt of the band GAPS on Coles’ I/AM/ME label.
Take Flight takes tracks from Coles’ critically acclaimed 2017 EP, Won’t Let You Down, whose title track was picked by Pete Tong to be his “Essential New Tune.” The dream-ridden tracks from the EP, which includes remixes of “Won’t Let You Down” by Catz ‘n Dogz and ParideSaranceni, are currently making rotations within clubs and radio stations around the globe.
