A single that went viral before it was even released has finally arrived; Kailee Morgue’s “Medusa” has made its official debut via Republic Records.
The 19-year-old singer/songwriter first teased the spellbinding new single in 2016 with a Twitter video, which quickly gained a huge amount of traction, spawning endless retweets and over 100,000 likes overnight. Now, almost a year later, the hauntingly beautiful track takes form as an official release that’s going just as viral as the teaser video.
“Medusa,” based on the famous mythological creature, is a lyrically-driven pop song with raw emotion and an airy soundscape that is turning heads everywhere. The Phoenix-born and Los Angeles-based artist’s voice is as ethereal as it is powerful, and the track is a kaleidoscopic look into the young artist’s bright future.
On the song Kailee says: “I wanted to create a story and paint a picture with words. I heard the first line in a movie [“There’s blood in the water”] and just had to incorporate it into that beat. It shows vulnerability and creates a different take on Medusa. In mythology, Medusa was cursed with snakes for hair and a hideous face over something that wasn’t her fault. It’s actually a tragic story, but people perceive her as a monster. So, she takes on the leadership role of the ‘broken’ in the song.”
“Medusa,” which premiered on the Fader, was produced by J Baran (Melanie Martinez, Panic! At the Disco, Carly Rae Jepsen), and is the first official release by Morgue, but be on the lookout for more. She recently posted a cover of label-mate Post Malone’s hit “rockstar” ft. 21 Savage. Watch here.
