Spotify is testing a brand new Android-only app that is strikingly similar to Pandora’s interface

The app, which is currently being tested by the company in Australia, was first noticed by app analytics firm Sensor Tower this past Tuesday. Titled ‘Stations,’ the app offers a ‘lean-back’ option to listen to music based on genres and managed playlists. Very similarly to Spotify’s existing algorithms, the app utilizes a personalization element with user-based playlists created based on previously collected data.

So far, the app has picked up less than 100 downloads to date, which suggests that it has only been tested by Spotify employees. The company told TechCrunch, “We are always testing new products and experiences, but have no further news to share at this time.”

With Stations, it looks like Spotify is taking an alternative approach to its free subscription offerings by creating a standalone app that stands as more direct competition to Pandora. The company is speculated to be going public this year.
